Preparing for bariatric surgery involves several important steps. Following this checklist helps ensure you are ready for a safe procedure and smooth recovery. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your surgeon and bariatric team.

Preparation Checklist

3–4 Weeks Before Surgery

Start Building Healthy Habits

  • Attend all required nutrition counseling visits
  • Complete any outstanding medical evaluations
  • Begin taking recommended vitamins if instructed
  • Stop smoking and avoid nicotine products
  • Reduce or eliminate alcohol
  • Increase your daily walking or physical activity as tolerated

2 Weeks Before Surgery

Your Body Is Preparing for Surgery

  • Begin your clear liquid diet (or other preoperative diet) as instructed by your bariatric team
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Continue taking approved medications unless instructed otherwise
  • Purchase protein shakes, clear liquids, vitamins, and other recommended supplies for your recovery
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery

1 Week Before Surgery

  • Stop all weight-loss medications (such as Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Zepbound®, Mounjaro®, or other GLP-1 medications) as instructed by your bariatric surgeon
  • Review all medication instructions, including blood thinners, aspirin, diabetes medications, and supplements
  • Confirm your surgery date, arrival time, and hospital instructions
  • Pack a small hospital bag

The Day Before Surgery

  • Follow your preoperative diet instructions
  • Drink plenty of approved clear liquids unless instructed otherwise
  • Shower with antibacterial soap if instructed
  • Do not eat or drink after the time provided by your surgical team
  • Get a good night's sleep

The Day of Surgery — Bring

  • Photo ID
  • Insurance card
  • Medication list
  • CPAP machine (if you use one)
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Glasses or hearing aids, if needed

Leave jewelry, valuables, and unnecessary personal items at home.
