Medical Clearance Before Bariatric Surgery
Medical optimization and specialist evaluations to prepare your health for a safe operation.
Bariatric surgery is one of the most effective treatments for obesity, but it is also a major operation. Before surgery, your healthcare team will perform a comprehensive medical evaluation to ensure you are in the best possible health for anesthesia, surgery, and recovery. Medical optimization is individualized—some patients require only a routine evaluation by their primary care provider, while others may benefit from additional testing or consultation with specialists.
Why Is Medical Optimization Important?
- Evaluate your overall health
- Identify medical conditions that require treatment
- Reduce anesthesia and surgical risks
- Improve healing and recovery
- Optimize chronic medical conditions before surgery
Your Primary Care Provider's Role
Most patients will be asked to see their primary care provider before surgery. Your primary care provider may:
- Review your medical history
- Perform a physical examination
- Review your medications
- Evaluate chronic medical conditions
- Order additional testing if needed
- Help optimize your overall health before surgery
Additional Specialist Evaluations
Not every patient needs to see additional specialists. Depending on your medical history, your surgeon may recommend:

- Severe acid reflux (GERD) or Barrett's esophagus
- H. pylori infection or peptic ulcer disease

Hematology
